Neil Gorsuch

On August 29, 1967, in Denver, Colorado, Neil Gorsuch was born into a family already familiar with law, politics, and western public life. He studied at Columbia University, Harvard Law School, and Oxford, then built a legal career through clerkships, private practice, the Justice Department, and the Tenth Circuit. Those institutions placed him securely inside the conservative legal movement before his national confirmation fight.

Gorsuch joined the Supreme Court in 2017 after the Senate's refusal to consider Merrick Garland and a subsequent partisan struggle over appointments. On the Court he has become known for textualism, skepticism toward the administrative state, and an expansive view of some religious liberty and Native sovereignty claims. His role in cases involving agency power, criminal law, and separation of powers has made him one of the most closely watched justices of the era.

Gorsuch's appointment helped solidify the Court's modern conservative majority and intensified conflict over judicial nominations as instruments of party power. Later rulings on Chevron deference, administrative governance, and constitutional interpretation remained closely linked to the jurisprudence he advanced.
