John Pershing
John J. Pershing used command of the American Expeditionary Forces in 1917-1918 to make mass mobilization and independent American command central to World War I.
Born September 13, 1860 / Died July 15, 1948
On September 13, 1860, in Laclede, Missouri, John Joseph Pershing was born into a family shaped by rural discipline and Civil War uncertainty. He attended the State Normal School at Kirksville, taught school, and then entered West Point, graduating in 1886. Service on the western frontier and later with Black regiments, whose cadets nicknamed him Black Jack, forged his military reputation.
Pershing fought in Cuba and the Philippines, led the Punitive Expedition into Mexico in 1916, and in 1917 took command of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. He insisted that U.S. troops fight as an identifiable American army rather than be absorbed piecemeal into British and French command. Campaigns at Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne made him the central military figure in America's World War I experience.
Pershing's command influenced later doctrines of mobilization, professional officer education, and coalition warfare in the United States Army. The AEF legacy also shaped interwar planning and the military generation that went on to lead in World War II.
