Jane Addams

Jane Addams used Hull House and Progressive reform after 1889 to connect settlement work, labor advocacy, and womens public leadership in the modern city.

Born September 6, 1860 / Died June 21, 1935

On September 6, 1860, in Cedarville, Illinois, Jane Addams was born into a prosperous family shaped by Republican reform politics and civic duty. She studied at Rockford Female Seminary and, after travel in Europe, became convinced that urban poverty required new institutions of social engagement. Settlement house models she observed abroad helped shape her next decisive step.

In 1889 Addams and Ellen Gates Starr founded Hull House in Chicago, creating a center for education, childcare, labor reform, immigrant assistance, and social investigation. Addams became a national Progressive leader through campaigns for factory regulation, juvenile courts, women's suffrage, and municipal reform. Her activism also extended into peace work, culminating in a Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.

Hull House became one of the most influential institutions of Progressive social reform and trained generations of reformers, social workers, and public intellectuals. Addams's work shaped urban policy, settlement practice, and the expectation that women could lead major national reform movements.
