Father Charles Coughlin

Father Charles Coughlin used radio sermons and the National Union for Social Justice during the 1930s to turn populist Catholic broadcasting into a powerful force in Depression politics.

Born October 25, 1891 / Died October 27, 1979

On October 25, 1891, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Charles Coughlin was born into an Irish Catholic family and educated in church institutions from an early age. He studied at St. Michael's College in Toronto, entered the Basilian order, and was ordained a priest in 1916. Assignment to the Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, Michigan, gave him the pulpit from which radio would make him famous.

Coughlin's broadcasts during the Great Depression reached millions and at first supported Franklin D. Roosevelt before turning sharply against the New Deal. Through the National Union for Social Justice, he promoted monetary reform, populist attacks on bankers, and increasingly conspiratorial, antisemitic politics. By the late 1930s federal pressure, Catholic hierarchy concern, and wartime censorship curtailed his national influence.

Coughlin's career demonstrated the political power of mass broadcasting long before television transformed campaign culture. His radio movement also remained a warning example in debates over demagoguery, religious populism, and hate speech in American public life.
