Douglas MacArthur

Douglas MacArthur moved from West Point to Pacific command in World War II, then shaped occupation policy in Japan and early Cold War military debate.

Born January 26, 1880 / Died April 5, 1964

On January 26, 1880, at the Little Rock Arsenal in Arkansas, Douglas MacArthur was born into an Army family whose postings made military life his earliest institution. He graduated first in his class at West Point in 1903 and built a fast-rising career through engineering assignments, staff work, and command in World War I. Service in the Philippines and at West Point made him one of the most visible officers in the interwar army.

MacArthur served as Army chief of staff, commanded in the Pacific during World War II, and became the central architect of the reconquest of the Philippines after his 1942 withdrawal. After Japan's surrender in 1945, he supervised the Allied occupation and oversaw constitutional reform, demilitarization, and reconstruction there. His later dismissal by Harry S. Truman during the Korean War in 1951 turned him into the focus of a national argument over civilian control and Cold War strategy.

MacArthur's wartime command helped shape the Pacific victory and the postwar alliance structure in East Asia. The Japanese constitution, the Truman-MacArthur controversy, and later civil-military debates all bore the mark of decisions made during his long command career.
